Some More Realistic Predictions on the 2010 iPhone

On a previous post – “2010 iPhone, Some Realistic Predictions“, I talked about some of the predictions that I made in October. We are now just about to finish November, and boy oh boy, have things changed! We’ve got news that the 2010 iPhone (or Apple’s codename – iPhone 3,1) is already being tested in San Francisco.

Just recently, I was looking at the previous iPhone’s, and their performance, hardware and software bumps – and I saw a trend. Apple is a company that really likes their product cycles and maintain a consistency in the amount of upgrades that they bring out each cycle…

When the first generation iPhone came out (or the edge iPhone), we had a steel casing, and only a couple of apps to play around with. Then, software upgrades kept on coming and we got more features and apps and so on.. Half way through the year, a 16GB version released – which added to the previously 4GB and 8GB versions.

The iPhone 3G came out (second gen iPhone), and we got what we all saw that lacked in the iPhone – 3G. We also got the App Store, which unlocked so much potential for the iPhone and quite a substantial amount of revenue for Apple (well maybe not for Apple, but for the rest of us, it is quite a bit of money :) ). We got a new hardware revamp, instead of the metal casing, we got a black or white plastic casing which made sure that the radio’s didn’t interfere with the casing. There was no increase in storage space, unless you don’t count the half-year upgrade.

Now, the latest iPhone – the 3G S. We get a 3.2 megapixel camera, with video recording and auto-focus, a compass, video recording and we get more storage space of 32GB and a faster processor. There is no change in the actual casing of the iPhone, so if you upgraded from the 3G, you didn’t need to buy a new case. The biggest improvements came with the iPhone 3.0 software. Apparently there were over a hundred new features, but the main ones were copy and paste, search, landscape support for more apps and a heap of others.

Now that I’ve told you about the upgrades, let me explain the actual trend to you. The iPhone 3G got a bigger hardware upgrade, then the 3G S got a bigger software upgrade. If we follow that trend, I think the new iPhone in 2010, will have more hardware bumps, than software bumps. The only predictable software bump that I can see happening so far is a redesigned maps app, to compete with the Android platform.

So what can we expect?

  • We can expect a better and more improved camera for the new iPhone.
  • We can safely say, there will be a new outer casing.
  • As usual, better battery life.
  • Thinner iPhone
  • New maps application.
  • Minor software improvements, i.e Bug Fixes, More features in already existent apps such as Safari, Weather…

What not to get your hopes up on:

  • Increased storage space. Although it is possible, and there is a 64GB iPod Touch coming out, I just don’t see Apple pulling a 64 gigger out of their pockets until 2011.
  • Massive Software upgrades such as new standard apps.
  • OLED displays – again, they are possible but not plausible.

Only time will give us a definite answer. I can say that the new iPhone will be released sometime in July, 2010. I can safely say that all of us are looking forward to that day. Lets hope that Apple pushes the boundary walls again, like they usually do, with the new iPhone.

As we are inching closer to July 2010, I’d like to know your thoughts on the new iPhone. Are you buying it? or are you going to buy the 2011 iPhone? What is your take of the 2010 iPhone? What new features do you expect?

Turn By Turn Maps for iPhone in 2010?

http://static.supergeekery.com/maps_iphone_icon.jpgApple is looking for a Software engineer that is going to help them out with developing for the standard maps application for the iPhone.

When they do get their new software engineer, I think they are going to get turn-by-turn navigation on the iPhone – for free, to compete with Androids map application that already supports turn-by-turn navigation.

Now with the 2010 iPhone (or iPhone 3,1) already in testing, do you think that the redesigned maps app will come into iPhone 4.0? Lets have some speculation come in – come on Apple, we’re all waiting for you to drop some hints our way!

Now is the time to buy an iPhone!

According to CNET News, AT&T will now be offering a 16 GB 3GS REFURBISHED iPhone for $49.  Not only is this a steal, but they will also waive the $35 activation fee.  If you have been considering the iPhone, but don’t have the cash to spend right now, I would highly recommend getting these refurbished iPhones.  Refurbished, if you didn’t know, are products that have been used and returned for any reason.  The company then completely wipes the device and gives it a new shell so their are no scratches anywhere.  Basically, you’re getting a brand new iphone for less money.  My experience with refurbished cell phones has been quite good, so I would expect Apple and AT&T to be the same.   Now go out and get that iPhone :) !

Question Time!

Question Time

This Question Time seems really simple, but not everyone knows how to take a screen shot on the iPhone. This question came from a colleague at work.

Here’s the question: “How do take a screen shot of my iPhone?”

Here’s the Answer: This question has come up on many blogs, and all you gotta do is do a quick Google Search, Brendon. But! Out of the kindness of my heart, and since we need this tutorial on our blog because we don’t already have it, here you go.

App Review – X-Plane 9

Name: X-Plane 9

Price: $9.99 USD

Rating: 4.5/5

X-Plane 9 is a ported version of the version for the computer, but it obviously doesn’t have as many maps or aircrafts availible. It has 6 different aircraft and 6 different locations which are Austria . This version features what is known to aviation enthusiasts as “light” aircraft. There are no goals, targets, missions or what ever you call them – you just fly around. While this may seem boring to some, to me it’s amazing. I’m an aviation buff and now I can fly an aircraft right from my iPhone. The controls are simple, it’s all on the accelerometer. You can control the speed and flaps with two sliders on the left and right of the screen. It has some pre-set situations where you can choose to land the plane. You can even set the plane on Autopilot which is great. The only thing I dislike is the lagg and the occasional crashing – not in gameplay, but in the menu’s and on the loading screen but in-game thre is no lagg at all and you can listen to your music.

I love the support that Austin Meyers provides to the users. i haven’t had the need to contact him myself, but some reportedly have and he has responded and fixed their problems. So if your an aviation buff or would like to show off your iPhone/iPod Touch’s potential to your friend get this game. Also look into some of their other games such as X-Plane Airliner, Helicopter and many many more. There is also a lite version of some of the versions so check them out before you buy.

OK, Puns aside (well, i’m not guaranteeing their won’t be any more in the post) this app is really AWESOME! I’ve been using the app heavily for the last couple of days and just like I mentioned in my quickapp a couple of hours ago, I wanted to review it.

Awesome Note combines notes and your to dos together – all in one app, and it sure as hell is a great replacement app for the standard note app on the iPhone. What I’m going to talk about in this post is what I think of Awesome Note.

What I’d like to talk about first is how good, and skilled the developers are. Not only do the develop an app that just works, but they also have really great customer service – which I will be talking about later.

The User Interface is based on customization. You can theme your Notes, change the font, text size and a lot of other things. The user interface is really classy, robust but not clumsy or hard to work out. I’m on an iPhone 3G and the app runs quite smoothly.

I could have just copied and pasted the feature set from the Bridworks website, but instead I’m going to talk you through them. Like I said, the app is quite robust. It’s got a massive feature set – and there is still much more to come.

There is one feature that I really want this app (and I think all ToDo apps should have this), and its Push Notifications. I hope BridWorks can shove Push Notifications in some where into this app.

Some of the users of the app are probably saying “Oh.. But wheres the Passcode Lock for the App…” and asking for all these other features. The thing is, BRID is working as hard as the Christmas elves the day before Christmas to bring you these new features.

Now, lets get to what I really like about the developers of BRID works, is that they have the best customer service and have great plans for this app. They even have great plans for the app, with guaranteed free updates for as long you live. What I liked about their customer support is that they are responsive, descriptive and really nice.
