On a previous post – “2010 iPhone, Some Realistic Predictions“, I talked about some of the predictions that I made in October. We are now just about to finish November, and boy oh boy, have things changed! We’ve got news that the 2010 iPhone (or Apple’s codename – iPhone 3,1) is already being tested in San Francisco.
Just recently, I was looking at the previous iPhone’s, and their performance, hardware and software bumps – and I saw a trend. Apple is a company that really likes their product cycles and maintain a consistency in the amount of upgrades that they bring out each cycle…
When the first generation iPhone came out (or the edge iPhone), we had a steel casing, and only a couple of apps to play around with. Then, software upgrades kept on coming and we got more features and apps and so on.. Half way through the year, a 16GB version released – which added to the previously 4GB and 8GB versions.
The iPhone 3G came out (second gen iPhone), and we got what we all saw that lacked in the iPhone – 3G. We also got the App Store, which unlocked so much potential for the iPhone and quite a substantial amount of revenue for Apple (well maybe not for Apple, but for the rest of us, it is quite a bit of money
). We got a new hardware revamp, instead of the metal casing, we got a black or white plastic casing which made sure that the radio’s didn’t interfere with the casing. There was no increase in storage space, unless you don’t count the half-year upgrade.
Now, the latest iPhone – the 3G S. We get a 3.2 megapixel camera, with video recording and auto-focus, a compass, video recording and we get more storage space of 32GB and a faster processor. There is no change in the actual casing of the iPhone, so if you upgraded from the 3G, you didn’t need to buy a new case. The biggest improvements came with the iPhone 3.0 software. Apparently there were over a hundred new features, but the main ones were copy and paste, search, landscape support for more apps and a heap of others.
Now that I’ve told you about the upgrades, let me explain the actual trend to you. The iPhone 3G got a bigger hardware upgrade, then the 3G S got a bigger software upgrade. If we follow that trend, I think the new iPhone in 2010, will have more hardware bumps, than software bumps. The only predictable software bump that I can see happening so far is a redesigned maps app, to compete with the Android platform.
So what can we expect?
- We can expect a better and more improved camera for the new iPhone.
- We can safely say, there will be a new outer casing.
- As usual, better battery life.
- Thinner iPhone
- New maps application.
- Minor software improvements, i.e Bug Fixes, More features in already existent apps such as Safari, Weather…
What not to get your hopes up on:
- Increased storage space. Although it is possible, and there is a 64GB iPod Touch coming out, I just don’t see Apple pulling a 64 gigger out of their pockets until 2011.
- Massive Software upgrades such as new standard apps.
- OLED displays – again, they are possible but not plausible.
Only time will give us a definite answer. I can say that the new iPhone will be released sometime in July, 2010. I can safely say that all of us are looking forward to that day. Lets hope that Apple pushes the boundary walls again, like they usually do, with the new iPhone.
As we are inching closer to July 2010, I’d like to know your thoughts on the new iPhone. Are you buying it? or are you going to buy the 2011 iPhone? What is your take of the 2010 iPhone? What new features do you expect?
